Ossie Ardiles exposes Shrewsbury manager's job hoax

Ossie Ardiles has dismissed news reports that he had applied for the manager's job at Shrewsbury as a hoax.

"It's a bit embarrassing, but it's not at all true," the former Tottenham, Newcastle and Swindon boss told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"It seems someone has put my name on a CV, but I can categorically deny I have applied for the job."

Ardiles, 57, seemed amused as well as red-faced about the story. "Maybe next time," he added in jest.

The former Argentina international made a sensational move to England after the 1978 World Cup, playing for four years at Tottenham.

He helped Spurs win the FA Cup in his third season there in 1980/81, and after a season on loan at Paris Saint Germain returned to White Hart Lane to play his part in Tottenham's Uefa Cup triumph in 1984.

In the autumn of 1987, he was caretaker manager of Tottenham between the resignation of David Pleat and the appointment of Terry Venables. He left Spurs in 1988, playing for Blackburn, QPR and Swindon - where he later took his first steps on the full-time managerial ladder in July 1989.

Shrewsbury are looking for a manager since sacking Paul Simpson at the end of April.
