Hughes named Shrews head of youth

Shrewsbury Town have appointed former defender Dave Hughes as their new head of youth development.

The 31-year-old left Shrewsbury for Cardiff for £450,000 in 2001 but a knee injury forced him to retire from the game in 2003 at the age of 25.

"I'm delighted to be back here," Hughes told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"I missed football and started my coaching qualifications. This is an ideal role for me and the only decision was 'yes'."

Hughes added: "We want to try and ensure there's a pathway from our centre of excellence through to the youth team and beyond."

Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson said: "I think with David and Martin James in the community development role, these are steps we're taking to try and get some stability at the football club."
