Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Simpson has stripped midfielder Ben Davies of the captain's armband in a bid to help him regain his form.
Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire he had been considering the move for a few weeks: "I just felt Ben needed that responsibility taken away from him.
"I want him in the side, I want him performing to the levels he was at the start of the season."
Defender Graham Coughlan will take over as Shrewsbury skipper.
Simpson believes Coughlan is the right character to re-ignite his side's push for promotion after the Shrews slipped out of the play-off places following Tuesday's 1-1 home draw with Exeter.
"Graham's a captain-type character, I felt he was the right one to take us on," added Simpson.
Shrewsbury were booed off by the home crowd at the end of Tuesday's game as they slipped to eighth in the League Two table.
The reaction followed recent criticism of the the team's away performances.
Simpson's side have failed to win any of their last 16 league away games, with their solitary success on the road coming on their opening trip of the season at Exeter.
