Central defender Martin Riley aims to prove Wolves were wrong to terminate his contract, by making the grade with Shrewsbury Town.
"I believe I can do it at League Two level," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.
Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson has given the 21-year-old the challenge to impress him between now and the end of the season.
"If he can show he's better than our other centre-halves, then he'll earn himself a contract," said Simpson.
"I've seen enough in training to think Martin is worth another look. Now the challenge is there for him to show us all what he can do."
Riley, a Wolverhampton boy who first joined his home-town club as a 14-year-old, admits he was disappointed not to be retained at Molineux.
But he added: "Dropping down two divisions gives me the chance to kick-start my career."
