Sheffield Wednesday have turned down a bid of about £2m from Premier League side Burnley for striker Marcus Tudgay.
The Hillsborough club have described the bid as unwelcome and regard it as an underhand tactic to unsettle the 26-year-old, something Burnley deny.
"We at no time have ever tried to unsettle their player," said Clarets manager Owen Coyle.
Tudgay, who only has one year remaining on his contract, is currently with the Owls on their pre-season tour of Malta.
He was Wednesday's leading scorer last season with 14 goals.
Coyle added: "We made what we considered a fair offer and Sheffield Wednesday turned it down and I've no problem with that.
"If they want to say anything to besmirch the good name of Burnley Football Club that's up to them, but I'm not going to get involved in all that."
