Turner is returning to his old club at Hillsborough

Chris Turner has revealed his biggest challenge as new Sheffield Wednesday boss will be to tackle a "losing culture" within the club.

The former Hartlepool United manager set out his ambitious vision for the First Division strugglers at a news conference held to announce his appointment on Thursday.

Turner revealed he has set his sights on attaining European football within five years.

And at one point he even alluded to following the example of another manager who began his career at Hartlepool, Brian Clough.

However, the former Hillsborough goalkeeper also insisted that he is firmly focused on the immediate task of guiding his old club out of the First Division relegation zone.

He said: "I would love to take Wednesday into the Premiership but the first task is to keep us in this division.

"It's a similar task to when I joined Hartlepool and had to keep them in the Football League, but I have confidence in myself and the players we already have to achieve that."

Turner also pledged to make an immediate start on making the change in attitudes he considers essential to achieving long-term success at Premiership level.

"I've analysed all the results going right down into the academy and there is a losing culture which has to be addressed as soon as possible," he said.

"That has to start with the first team but there are losing teams right through this club and I have to turn those results into something everyone can be proud of.

"At Hartlepool, the first team are top of the Third Division and the reserves and youth team are both second in their leagues.

"I want lads at the lower levels coming through with a winning attitude. I do not want players who are losers or who have a poor attitude around me."

The Wednesday board revealed that they had been impressed by Turner's passion and ambition in his interview.

And the 44-year-old former Manchester United and Sunderland player likened himself to Martin O'Neill - with whom he worked at Leicester - in his touchline style of management.

"I'm passionate about my team and the way we play," he said.

"I motivate and encourage players and I want those players to reflect how I am."

Wednesday are currently �22m in debt but hope to improve their financial situation in the summer by offloading more than a dozen highly-paid players whose contracts expire then.

However, Turner hinted that some of those players could still have a future at Hillsborough.

"Having 13 or 14 players out of contract at the end of the season will be a breath of fresh air," he agreed.

But he added: "I would say to those players, show me you want to play for Sheffield Wednesday and that you have the ability to take us beyond where you are now and you will stay at the club."
