Scunthorpe miss out on loan signings Hayes and Williams

Marcus Williams
Williams picked up an injury playing for Reading reserves

Scunthorpe United have failed in an attempt to bring former players Marcus Williams and Paul Hayes back to the club on loan.

BBC Radio Humberside understands terms had been agreed with Hayes, but that Preston were not prepared to let the striker leave.

The move for Reading left-back Williams was scuppered after he picked up an injury in the Royals' reserves.

Iron had also been linked with loan moves for both players in January.

The relegation-threatened Championship side were also hoping to add Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Rose and a Championship striker in time for the weekend's trip to Ipswich Town, but that now looks unlikely.

Spurs have blocked any move for Rose, as he could be on the substitutes bench for their game against West Ham United.

United will be led by caretaker manager Tony Daws and assisted by chief scout Lee Turnbull for the trip to Portman Road following this week's sacking of Ian Baraclough.
