Scunthorpe United could miss out on a grant to turn Glanford Park all-seated because their finances are so healthy.

The club hoped cash from the Football Foundation would help upgrade their Doncaster Road terrace.

But club general manager Dave Beeby told BBC Look North: "One consideration is whether the club needs the grant or if the work can be done on its own."

Beeby revealed that the foundation only has £5m available to fund all projects across the country.

Scunthorpe fan Dave Beverley from the Football Supporters Federation fears that the club could have to find up to £2.5m to fund the project out of its own coffers.

He told BBC Look North: "It's come to light that the Football League will have no money so Scunthorpe will have to fund it themselves."

United will be forced by law to seat their terraces if they stay up because under current regulations any team that spends three seasons in English football's second tier must have all-seater facilities.

"You have to get planning permission then you apply for a grant," Beeby added.

Scunthorpe made the application to rebuild the stand in November to North Lincolnshire Council and expect an answer in January.

They plan to extend the stand to keep Glanford Park's capacity at its present level of just below 10,000.

Beverley, who advocates keeping the terraces, added: "There are no grants for Scunthorpe United just like there were no grants when the ground was built."

The club reported a total loss of £1.5m over the past two years are thought to have recouped most of that from the sale of Gary Hooper to Celtic in the summer.
