Brownsword played more games for Scunthorpe than any other player

Former Scunthorpe United and Hull City defender Jack Brownsword has died at the age of 86.

The player began his career with the Tigers in 1946 but transferred to the Iron a year later.

He was with Scunthorpe when they were elected into the Football League in 1950 and stayed with them until he retired in 1964 aged 41.

Brownsword was an expert penalty taker scoring 49 of his 50 United goals from the spot in 597 league games.

He holds the record for league appearances for the Iron and was a guest of honour at the club when they played their last game at the Old Show Ground before moving to Glanford Park in 1989.

Two years ago he was elected to the Professional Footballers' Association Hall of Fame as Scunthorpe United fans' all-time favourite player beating Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence in the process.
