Scunthorpe Scorpions team manager Kenny Smith has lost his long battle against throat cancer.

Smith, 55, died just two days after fulfilling his pledge to manage his side at Saturday's Premier Trophy semi-final against Edinburgh.

Scorpions promoter Rob Godfrey said: "Everyone connected with the club is absolutely devastated."

Smith was instrumental in leading the Scorpions into the Premier League from the Conference.

His funeral will take place on Tuesday, 21 July beginning with a service at the track from 1000 BST.
