Salisbury City defender Jon Bass has announced that he is retiring from the game after a 17-year career.

Bass, 33, joined Salisbury in 2006 from Bristol Rovers and has also appeared for Birmingham City and Hartlepool.

By the end of last season he was the Whites' only part-time player and could not commit to a full-time contract.

"I was just ready to go into other things. It had been quite a tough season physically and mentally last year," Bass told BBC Wiltshire.

"We've got a family building business and that really requires my full-time effort now as opposed to travelling around the country," he added.

"For 10 months of the year you're always thinking about your next game and trying to prepare. I'm ready to come away from that commitment but I've had a great time playing and I'm proud of that.

"I've had a fabulous last three years (at Salisbury) and its been a perfect closing curtain on my career."
