Andy Burgess was unhappy at his team-mate's dismissal

Rushden and Diamonds captain Andy Burgess blamed the Ebbsfleet bench for the sending-off of his team-mate Simon Downer during Saturday's 1-0 defeat.

Downer was shown a straight red card in the closing minutes of the Blue Square Premier game, following a challenge on Luke Moore.

"I think the reaction from certain people on their bench was certainly over the top," said Burgess.

"I'm not sure the referee was going to send him off."

Downer's dismissal sparked a melee involving players and officials which resulted in rival managers Garry Hill and Liam Daish being sent to the stands.
