Reading have appointed Steve Shorey as chief scout on a contract until 2013.
Shorey first took on the role in January when his predecessor Brian McDermott was named manager.
Shorey, father of former Royals left-back Nicky, told the club website: "Hopefully this will not be the last contract I sign with the club.
"You have to have an eye for a player [but] it's all about mileage - if you don't put the miles in, you don't find the players."
