Boyd apologises to Rangers boss

Kris Boyd
Boyd is the SPL's top scorer again this season

Rangers striker Kris Boyd has apologised to manager Walter Smith for his behaviour during Sunday's game against Hamilton Academical.

Smith was understood to have been upset by the lack of respect shown by Boyd over his exclusion from the starting line-up ahead of the 5-1 victory.

The manager made his position clear to the player on Tuesday and the apology was offered the following day.

It means Boyd is available for Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup final.

But the likelihood of the striker starting the match against Celtic would have been slim even before this week's events.

Smith has tended to omit his top scorer from matches against their Glasgow rivals because of his lack of work-rate.

And the latest incident raised fresh doubts about Boyd's long-term future at Ibrox.

The player was the subject of a failed Birmingham City bid in January as the Glasgow club attempted to balance the books.

Rangers had accepted an increased offer of nearly 4m for the former Kilmarnock forward, but Boyd could not agree personal terms at St Andrews.

Attending a media conference ahead of Sunday's final, assistant manager Ally McCoist would not be drawn on Boyd being sent home from training on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, I've got no comment to make at all," he said.

"Any situation involving Kris Boyd and the manager is between those two. I don't know enough about it."

Boyd - who has scored 24 goals this season so far - failed to find the net after coming on as a substitute for the final 25 minutes of Sunday's victory.

Boyd available for cup final - McCoist

Asked if Boyd would be considered for the Old Firm final, McCoist said: "Without doubt. When you look at the squad, we've got 25 or 26 players available then we'll narrow it down and take a squad away.

"Kris Boyd has not been ruled out by me, you'll have to ask the manager.

"Nothing's happened that'll prevent us from having the idea of the best team that will start the game. Nothing has happened. That will not change.

"I'll give an honest opinion - we'll all sit down and give honest opinions on who we think should start. That's the way it should be and that's the way it will be."

McCoist, who himself spent many a frustrating spell on the bench, did have advice for Boyd - and others - on how to handle being dropped from the starting 11.

"I would give all the players the same advice as it's part and parcel of being involved in an Old Firm squad," he said.

"You have to conduct yourself fine when you're on the park but equally off the park. It goes for any Old Firm player.

"I wouldn't single out Kris Boyd for advice any more than I would Kenny Miller or Kyle Lafferty.

"They're all in the same boat and know what's expected of them being a Rangers player."

MY SPORT: DEBATE

Despite the bust-up, McCoist claims he would be more disappointed if any player showed no reaction to being left on the bench.

"If anybody's not in the team - not just Kris Boyd - and were happy then we've got a problem, lets not make any mistake about that," he added.

The latest incident comes during an eventful year for Boyd off the park.

In October, Boyd announced he would not play again for the Scotland national team under the stewardship of George Burley after being left on the bench against Norway.

He also seldom featured from the start as Rangers progressed to last season's Uefa Cup final but also made a rare Old Firm derby start during the 1-0 defeat to Celtic in December.
