Delaney aiming to keep QPR place

QPR defender Damien Delaney insists he is unperturbed by the club's recent signing of left-back Gary Borrowdale.

Delaney said: "It doesn't really bother me, to be honest. I knew we were going to get a left-back in.

"Left-back is probably the only position we didn't have cover for. For every other position on the pitch we had two or three players.

"I knew someone was going to be signed. It's just a case of me knuckling down now and keeping my place in the team."

Delaney impressed after moving to Loftus Road from Hull last season.

But this term his form has been patchy and he lost his place to Matt Connolly, who usually operates as a right-back or central defender.

Delaney has since been restored to the side and kept his place despite Borrowdale arriving on loan from Coventry with a view to a permanent move in January.

"With my disciplinary record, I do pick up suspensions and with my loss of form, Matt Connnolly played at left-back, so it was obvious the club would go and get someone," the Republic of Ireland international admitted.

He added: "It's fair to say I've not been at my best this season.

"It was a long season and then I played for Ireland in the summer and also returned to pre-season training early, so maybe there was a bit a fatigue there."

And Delaney believes the appointment of new coach Paulo Sousa has helped improve his performances.

He said: "Hopefully now with the new manager coming in, me and the team can both kick on from here.

"His (Sousa's) approach has been to say 'as my left-back, this is what I want from you'. It's a bit more defensive but what he has done for me is defined my role.

"With Iain Dowie it was more of a free role but the new man has given everyone their role for the team and you can see us carrying it out to a tee."
