Shaw ponders Preston's finances

Deepdale
The Deepdale club's turnover could increase to 20m if they win promotion

Chairman Derek Shaw has said Preston will continue to act cautiously with their finances even if they win promotion to the Premier League.

North End must first beat QPR in the final round of Championship games on Sunday to stand any chance of making it into the play-offs.

"We'd act like Stoke have done," Shaw told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"They've had a magnificent season, spent sensibly and I think they'll build on that."

And Shaw is aware even one season in the top-flight will provide a massive financial boost for the Deepdale club.

We'd have a turnover of around £20m, so invested wisely it would be very good for a number of years

He added: "We'd have a turnover of around £20m, so invested wisely it would be very good for a number of years.

"And the current parachute payments are bigger than our actual turnover, so we could probably manage with those for a period of time."

The increased burden on clubs in the present global financial crisis is likely to have an impact across the divisions.

But Shaw commented that is not an unusual situation for the Lancashire side.

He said: "I've been here for a number of years now and we've always had that concern.

"A number of players have left this club who I or the fans didn't want to leave, but they've helped relieved any financial worries.

"We can't keep spending and spending without every now and again getting some back in to try and balance the books."

You will be able to hear full commentary of Preston's play-off decider with QPR on Sunday on BBC Radio Lancashire from 1300 BST.
