Gannon is approaching the end of his first month in charge at Vale Park

Port Vale manager Jim Gannon has revealed he is planning changes to his backroom team.

Gannon has been assisted by Geoff Horsfield and Mark Grew, who worked alongside former boss Micky Adams, since his arrival at Vale on 6 January.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I've told the board that I'm willing to sacrifice one or two players to have the right staff.

"It's no good having 21 or 22 players and not having the staff to get the best out of them."

Gannon continued: "It's better to have 20 players and have the staff to maximise those players' potential.

"This club is understaffed and the staff are probably underqualified for the jobs they've been asked to do.

"I think it's very important that we help the current staff to improve the way they do things, and we really do need specialists in certain positions.

"I know exactly the kind of people that I want, but we'll just have to give every opportunity to the staff that are here to fill those positions.

"I have people that I trust in the game and if they're available they might be the right people, but at this stage the staff reorganisation is not something that I want to do.

"It's something that will happen in time and probably will be best implemented at a later stage."

Horsfield was assistant to Adams before his departure to Sheffield United and Gannon has been impressed with his input so far.

"Geoff's been a great assistant," he said. "He helps with coaching, the warm-ups and the management of players.

"He's a good lad but he needs to gain a lot more experience and he'll become a better assistant manager as time goes by."
