Port Vale boss Micky Adams has praised new signing Gary Roberts for his performance in the 1-0 defeat by Aberdeen at Vale Park on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old midfielder made his home debut for the club, just hours after agreeing a six-month contract.
Adams told BBC Radio Stoke: "He was excellent, his range of passing was a different class and he looks like he's got a delivery from set-pieces.
"That's been our Achilles heel and he can be pleased with what he's done."
A late penalty gave the SPL side a hard-fought victory in a close affair, but Adams was happy with the way that his team performed.
"We're disappointed to lose the game because it was a soft penalty and we didn't deserve to lose," said Adams.
"It's a defeat that's happened in pre-season so I'm not going to get too upset about it.
"We got stronger as the game wore on, a lot of the players have got 90 minutes under their belt and we've got a lot out of the game."
