New striker Justin Richards is determined to fire Port Vale to promotion from League Two.

The 29-year-old signed a two-year contract with Vale in June and is likely to start the season in attack alongside top scorer Marc Richards.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "After speaking to the manager [Micky Adams], our ambitions match each other's.

"The club didn't need selling. Everyone knows Port Vale is a big club, especially in the division we're in."

After spending much of his career in non-league football, Richards moved to Cheltenham in June 2009 and scored 15 goals in his only season at Whaddon Road.

He sees the move to Vale Park as the chance to achieve promotion for the first time in his career.

"That was a massive factor in me coming here," added the striker. "Every player wants to have some sort of silverware before they finish playing and I'm no different."
