Adams' side begin the League Two season away at Bury on 7 August

Port Vale boss Micky Adams is hopeful that his strike-force will be able to contribute more goals next season.

Adams has signed Justin Richards from Cheltenham and former loanee Sean Rigg on a permanent deal from Bristol Rovers to boost his attacking options.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "We defended well as a unit all season but obviously we didn't score enough.

"We've got some decent firepower there and I believe we've got people who can score goals for us."

Only two players - Marc Richards (23) and Rob Taylor (10) - reached double figures for Vale last season, while the whole team managed 61 goals in 46 league matches.

Justin Richards topped the scoring charts for Cheltenham in 2009/10 with 15 goals.

Meanwhile, Adams says his side can expect a difficult start to the campaign when they face Bury at Gigg Lane on 7 August.

Vale also have home games with Chesterfield and Torquay in the opening month of the season, as well as a trip to relegated Southend.

"The computer hasn't done us any favours but, having said that, we're going to have to face each other during the course of the season," added the Vale manager.

"If we have to play the better teams in the early part of the season, so be it.

"It will give us a better understanding of where we are as a squad and as a unit."
