Port Vale's Marc Richards happy with new formation

Port Vale striker Marc Richards says that he enjoyed the switch to a 4-4-2 formation in the side's 2-1 victory at Grimsby on 28 December.

Vale boss Micky Adams has used Richards as a lone striker for much of the campaign, but partnered on-loan signing Sean Rigg up front for the game.

"I enjoyed it and I know a few of the other lads did because they've been brought up with it," said Richards.

Weather permitting, Vale will play Bradford City at home on Saturday.

The pitch at Vale Park has been covered to protect it from snow, although the previous two games scheduled to have taken place there (against Chesterfield on 19 December and Burton on 26 December) have had to be postponed due to bad weather.

Vale will have defender John McCombe back from suspension for the game, which may tempt Adams back to the three-man defence that has proved successful this season.

"For whatever reason, the gaffer has decided to play three at the back, which has made us more resolute in defence," added Richards.

"We just need to concentrate on going forward more, creating more chances and scoring more goals."

Richards, who signed for Vale in July 2007, has scored 11 goals so far this season.
