Micky Adams' side have lost just five of their 21 league games this season

Port Vale manager Micky Adams believes that his team are not out of the League Two promotion race yet, despite lying 16th in the table after 21 matches.

Vale, who have drawn 11 times this season, are seven points behind seventh-placed Morecambe.

Adams told BBC Radio Stoke: "I'd like to be closer, but don't tell me seven points is a big margin. It's not.

"We haven't put back-to-back wins together too often, but we will do and we might surprise a few people."

Adams took over at Vale Park in June, with the club hoping to recover from finishing 18th in their first season back in League Two.

"I've enjoyed it," he said. "I know what I've got, what I'm working with, the ins and outs of the club, where the problems lie, and you have to work your way through it.

"As a manager, all you ask for is time. I'm sure I'll get it and I think I deserve it.

"I don't want to blow my own trumpet, but I think I've steadied the ship on the football side of things behind the scenes.

"There's a structure to everything we do. Everyone knows where they stand and we know how we want to play. All we've got to do is pick up more wins, and if we do that, that's fantastic."
