Danny Glover has scored four goals in 44 appearances for Port Vale
Port Vale striker Danny Glover has admitted to BBC Radio Stoke that he came close to quitting football.
The 20-year-old saw his father, Dean, leave his role as Port Vale manager in May and then he was placed on the transfer list by new boss Micky Adams.
"I thought I did alright in pre-season and I scored some goals," Glover said.
"All of a sudden I was on the transfer list, so I had to sit down and think about whether I wanted to carry on or take a different career path."
He added: "There was a lot of questions running through my head at the time, but my dad was there, he gave me some good advice and things have worked out alright for me."
A turbulent summer for Glover at Vale Park ended with a short loan spell at non-league Salisbury in August, where he failed to score in six appearances.
However, after some good performances for the reserves, he has forced his way back into the first-team setup at Vale, coming on as a substitute in the club's last two matches against Stevenage and Barnet.
Glover had been targeted by a section of supporters whilst his father was in charge, and he said the abuse he received affected him severely.
"Fans only see you for 90 minutes on a Saturday so they don't see you out of match-day mode," he added.
"It hit me hard, and only my family knew how hard it was for me to keep struggling through.
"I could have thrown in the towel many times, and I felt like doing it on some occasions, but I had good people around me to advise me.
"My dad's been there and done it himself. In his career, he says he had this for many years before he cemented a first-team place.
"He knew I'd start doing well again, and I sort of knew, but I couldn't guarantee that I was going to play any part this season.
"He was helping me and helping me, and finally it's paid off."
