Richards' fitness plan helps Vale

Port Vale striker Marc Richards says a specialised exercise plan has helped him make his best start to a season.

The 27-year-old was troubled with an Achilles injury last season but is now following a training plan to prevent the problem recurring.

Richards scored his ninth of the season in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Cheltenham.

"My problem is still there, I just have to manage it. I'm trying to work hard to get things right on the pitch," Richards told BBC Radio Stoke.

Richards is currently one of League Two's form strikers, averaging a goal every two games and Vale manager Micky Adams says he believes Richards' performances can help continue the side's form.

He said: "Goalscorers thrive on goals, it gives them confidence and the team confidence."
