A second-half cracker from Michael Pook secured a point for Cheltenham at Port Vale in assistant manager John Schofield's first game in charge.
The first-half was wide open and Vale's Marc Richards was given the freedom of the penalty area to chest down a long ball from Luke Prosser and fire home.
Vale keeper Chris Martin saved from Michael Townsend, while Lewis Haldane struck the angle of bar and post.
But Pook drove a first-time shot from 25 yards which found the top corner.
Port Vale manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke:
"All in all I'm happy with what we've produced, and I've got to be pleased with coming out of the game relatively unscathed.
"I'm pleased with Luke Prosser because he came in with very little preparation and played in a system he's not used, but he did very well.
"We won't know until the end of the season whether that will be a good point or a bad point, but when you're not at your best you have to take a point when it comes along."
Cheltenham caretaker manager John Schofield told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I thought it was a good display. We've had 13 shots at goal, 10 or 11 corners so we have done OK.
"We kept going, we had a game plan and we're not going to get carried away.
"We haven't had a midfield score all year, and he's (Pook) had a go with his left foot and it's flown in for him."
