Owen led Stockport to promotion via the League Two play-offs in 2008

Port Vale defender Gareth Owen has said that he would be delighted to be handed the captain's armband by new manager Micky Adams next season.

"I've done it before with Stockport with great success, and I've done it at Vale," Owen, 26, told BBC Radio Stoke.

"It's a great honour to captain any football club, and if it comes to me, that would be great.

"But on the first day of the season, I want to make sure my name is on that team sheet. Anything else is a bonus."

Owen signed for Vale on a permanent basis in January following a successful loan spell from Stockport, and started 13 games in all competitions for the Valiants.

He was one of five players to captain Vale last season, along with Sam Stockley, Marc Richards, Dave Brammer and John McCombe.

Owen missed the final two months of the season with an ankle ligament injury, but he has made a full recovery and will take part in the club's pre-season programme.
