Yates was released by Morecambe after three years at Christie Park

Port Vale have made their second signing in the space of three days with the arrival of former Morecambe defender Adam Yates on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old has signed a two-year contract and follows former Brighton midfielder Tommy Fraser to Vale Park.

Yates told BBC Radio Stoke: "Obviously it's been coming for a while, but until Micky Adams had given his say on the deal, nothing was quite finalised.

"He's happy for me to be part of the squad, that's enough for me to sign."

He added: "Had Micky said to me that I wasn't part of his plans I would have looked elsewhere.

"I had spoken to a couple of clubs, but I wasn't going to sign for anyone else until the decision had been made by Port Vale."

Yates, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, made 89 starts in three seasons with Morecambe, and helped them to promotion to the Football League in 2007.

He is excited by the prospect of moving to the club as they enter a new era under Adams.

"Micky has been a fantastic appointment, he's got all the credentials for this league and higher," said Yates.

"The players will be physically fitter than they've ever been and that interests me because I want to push myself on.

"If we all do that, it will beneficial for the players, the manager and most importantly the fans."

Meanwhile, Vale defender Luke Prosser has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.
