Port Vale defender Gareth Owen could return from injury within two weeks despite being ruled out for the rest of the season.
The 27-year-old damaged ankle ligaments earlier this month and was told he was likely to face a lengthy lay-off.
Owen told BBC Radio Stoke: "I can't believe how well things have settled.
"If I'm honest I wrote this season off, but the way things have gone I'm desperate to get back. Hopefully I'll be back in the next few weeks."
"I'm doing everything right, the strength and exercise required. I'm doing sprints in training and the physio is having to rein me in," he said.
Owen was handed the captain's armband when he signed from Stockport in January but knows a return to the starting line-up is not a foregone conclusion.
"I don't expect to walk straight back in, people who've got the shirts now are in charge of them," he said.
"If they keep performing and winning until the end of the season then I'll have no complaints about not being in the side."
