Vale sweating on McCombe fitness

John McCombe
McCombe captained Port Vale for the first time against Accrington

Port Vale defender John McCombe is hopeful of playing against Bradford on Saturday despite straining his groin in the 2-0 defeat by Accrington.

McCombe, who captained the side against Stanley, joins Lee Collins, Gareth Owen, Scott Brown, Marc Richards and Dave Brammer on a lengthy injury list.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "All my back and my hips stiffened up.

"I didn't want to come off, especially being captain. I'll see how it settles down and hope to play at Bradford."

McCombe, who is the fifth player to captain Port Vale this season, said it was a unexpected honour to be given the armband.

He added: "It was a bit of a surprise being captain but it's something that I enjoyed and hopefully I'll get the chance to do it again."
