Port Vale manager Dean Glover has blamed defensive errors for Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Accrington Stanley.
The Vale boss told BBC Radio Stoke: "We got done with poor defending, it's a case of who's not picking up and who's not concentrating."
The defeat was the Vale's ninth in the league away from home this season and with 10 games to go Golver wants to see a big improvement.
"There's a lot of hard work ahead and I hope we put a run together," he said.
The Vale boss refused to use the excuse that his top scorer, Marc Richards, was missing with an Achilles injury.
"We've got to defend goals and you can't put that down to us missing Marc. If we don't defend as a group we'll get punished."
Glover added his team lacked fight and determination.
"It wasn't a pretty game and we didn't compete like they did. We need to do the ugly side of the game a lot better and compete.
"We work hard in training but we can't carry it into games."
