Dean Glover has told unhappy supporters to direct their frustrations at him and not his Port Vale team.
A section of the Vale crowd called for manager Glover's head following their 1-0 defeat to Lincoln at Vale Park.
"Supporters say what they want and get away with it, but I'd rather they direct abuse at me than give it to the lads," Glover told BBC Radio Stoke.
"I've had it quite a lot of times this year, and when it's personal it does hurt, but you get on with it."
Glover added: "We're not good enough at the moment. We're getting beaten too often.
"There's a lot of youth in the set-up, we need more experience and more of a physical presence in the side."
The loss to Lincoln was Vale's ninth home defeat in 16 home games, the most of any team in the Football League.
