Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock is giving a trial to Japanese international midfielder Akihiro Ienaga.
The 22-year-old's arrival is part of the link-up with K&K Shonan Management, who have a presence on the Argyle board in director Yasuaki Kagami.
Sturrock told the club's website: "I will be looking to see if he is of the standard required to play for us.
"He looks a technically gifted player but the pace of the game here was frightening for him."
Ienaga began his career as a trainee with Gamba Osaka, one of the leading clubs in the J. League - the top-flight of Japanese domestic football.
He broke into the senior squad in 2004 and helped the club to their first J-League title the following year.
Ienaga made the move Gamba Osaka's J-League rivals Oita Trinita on a season-long loan in 2007.
His solitary appearance for the national team came as a substitute in Japan's 2-0 win against Peru in March 2007.
