MacLean has only scored four goals since joining from Cardiff City
Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock has said he expects to see improvements from the club's two most expensive signings, Simon Walton and Steve MacLean.
Midfielder Walton joined in the summer from QPR for a club-record fee of 750,000, while striker MacLean arrived from Cardiff in January for 500,000.
"It hasn't worked out so far," Sturrock told BBC Spotlight.
"The two of them have had conversations and at the end of the day they know where I'm coming from."
Sturrock added: "I do feel that Steve and Walts are exceptional talents, they were brought here because I felt they could fit in to the structure here."
MacLean has not played since the 0-0 draw at Burnley a month ago while Walton's last match was the 2-1 defeat at home to Norwich two weeks ago.
Since then Sturrock has made wholesale changes to the side and has seen them win their last two games.
MacLean did not even feature in Tuesday's reserve game at home to Yeovil Town, although Walton played the full 90 minutes.
