Rowe closing in on full fitness for Peterborough United

Peterborough United midfielder Tommy Rowe has said he expects to be fully fit for the start of the new season.

The 21-year-old made his first start of pre-season against Leicester on Tuesday after picking up a thigh strain.

Rowe told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I spent two weeks out and it's not nice to be watching the team doing well while you're sitting on the bench.

"I might have come back a game too early, but it's only pre-season and it's all about fitness at this stage."

Rowe has struggled to make an impression at London Road following a move from Stockport last summer.

Nevertheless he notched up 32 league appearances in the Championship last season, scoring two goals.

"It was the final training session in Portugal and I just stretched too far in a game of head tennis and picked up a thigh strain," he said.

Rowe was used as a left-back against Leicester and has said his aim is to become a first-team regular under Gary Johnson.

"I'd like to hold down a more regular position in the team and I don't really mind where I have to play to get in the side," he said.

Meanwhile a Posh XI beat Histon 3-1 on Tuesday night with Chris Whelpdale scoring on his return from an ankle injury.

Josh Simpson missed a return to his former club after joining up with Southend on trial.
