Peterborough United's Charlie Lee was pleased to get on the score sheet in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Stevenage.
Utility-man Lee is competing with Russell Martin and Tommy Williams for a full-back berth in the side for their Championship opener against Derby.
Lee told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "You get close and you just hit them - I hit them all the time and always get in trouble with the strikers.
"It was a nice goal, but it's only pre-season so it doesn't really count."
Craig Morgan and Dean Keates both missed the match after failing to to overcome knocks.
But Shaun Batt helped his cause for a starting place against Derby by scoring the first goal.
Lee admits he is unsure whether or not he will be lining up at Pride Park, but will be doing all he can to force his way into Darren Ferguson's plans.
"I hope I'm in the team, I'm going to try really hard to get in the first XI, but if not I'll still be working hard," he said.
"I can't wait for the season to start, pre-season has been hard, but it's necessary and the team is looking fit."
