Ferguson has led Posh to back-to-back promotions

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has said he intends to continue playing two forwards despite promotion to the Championship.

Ferguson believes there is no reason to be cautious despite going up a level.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I think 4-4-2 is our best formation for the players we have.

"We need to have a little bit of flexibility, the lads know how to play different formations, but if it ain't broke don't fix it."

With last season's top scorer Craig Mackail-Smith yet to make an appearance in pre-season, Ferguson has tried a number of different combinations up front.

George Boyd, Shaun Batt and youngster Ben Wright have each been given the chance to impress alongside Aaron Mclean.

Posh drew 3-3 with Fulham at London Road on Saturday and Ferguson says he is pleased with how the club's preparations have progressed.

"I could have done with Craig Mackail-Smith, Dean Keates and Chris Whelpdale being fit as you don't really want any injuries," he said.

"But it'll be the first team against Stevenage and the first team against Oxford - it might be different against Sunderland being so close to the start of the season."
