Blackett hoping to fill Posh void

Blackett has featured nine times for Peterborough this season

Peterborough United defender Shane Blackett believes he is the man to fill the empty full-back position left by Tommy Williams after his knee injury.

The 26-year-old came on as a substitute during Saturday's victory over Oldham and hopes to start against Cheltenham on Friday.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Hopefully I can step back into my role at left-back and help the team.

"Hopefully if selected I can come in and do a good job."

Blackett has not started a game since February when he put through his own net against Southend, which was the last time Posh lost in League One.

The former Dagenham and Redbridge man admits that it will not be the simplest of returns.

"There's always going to be pressure on footballers whether you're at the top of the league or the bottom of the league," he said.

"I've got no doubt in my ability that I can step in and play a role and get back to my normal self again."

Peterborough are looking to tighten their grip on the second automatic promotion place with victory over Cheltenham on Friday.

They will be boosted by a bumper crowd at London Road after it was confirmed the visitors decided not to take their full allocation of away end tickets, leaving more room for Posh fans.
