Oxford United sign Kettering midfielder Lee Fowler
Lee Fowler started his career under Gordon Strachan at Coventry City
Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United have signed Welsh midfielder Lee Fowler for the rest of the season following his release by Kettering.
Fowler, 26, had been a Kettering regular this season since moving from Forest Green Rovers in the summer.
But the ex-Wales under-21 international lost his first team place a month ago and was released on Boxing Day.
He is expected to go straight into Chris Wilder's squad for the New Year's Day trip to Rushden and Diamonds.
Wilder told BBC Oxford: "Lee knows his way around the Conference and can fit in with how we want to play.
"He's got a point to prove because I think personally that he should have done better in his career. "We'll give him the opportunity and all the help we can to get him up and running, but first and foremost he's got to help himself.
"But we think there's a player in there that's underachieved and hopefully we can bring the best out of him."
Cardiff-born Fowler started his career with Coventry City before moving on to Huddersfield Town, Burton Albion, Forest Green and latterly Kettering, where he made 18 appearances.
He has also spent time on loan with Scarborough and Newport County.
I'd like to think I can bring something a little bit different from the midfielders we've got here

Fowler added: "The club speaks for itself and the manager speaks for himself as well, so it's a good opportunity for me.
"I've played for a few middle teams around this league. Now I've got an opportunity to come to a team that's at the top end and win promotion.
"I'd like to think I can bring something a little bit different from the midfielders we've got here."
