Burnell has not played for Oxford since January

Former Oxford United captain Joe Burnell has left the Kassam Stadium by mutual consent.

The 28-year-old midfielder made 28 appearance for the U's after joining from Northampton last summer.

Burnell was placed on the transfer-list along with left-back Chris Carruthers by manager Chris Wilder.

United say there have been no firm offers for either player, but it is understood there has been some interest in Burnell from League One side Exeter.

Burnell told Oxford United's website: "I have enjoyed my time at the club and really hope they do well and win promotion this year."
