Oldham Athletic capture non league striker Matt Smith

Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic have signed striker Matt Smith from Blue Square Bet North side Solihull Moors.

The 21-year-old former Cheltenham Town trainee scored 23 goals in 27 appearances last season and has signed a two-year deal.

He told the club website: "I heard there was interest from a number of clubs, but the most came from Oldham.

"After speaking to Paul Dickov, I was convinced Oldham Athletic was the club for me."

Last July he joined Redditch United, and also had a spell at Droylsden, before his prolific spell at Solihull, where he hit 12 goals in 14 matches.

It will be his first step into professional football, which he will also combine with finishing a degree, and he is looking forward to the step-up.

"I am not pretending there is a big gap, but it is up to me to work hard," he added.

"And if I do, I am confident I can make the step-up."
