Cobblers chairman David Cardoza delighted at cash boost

League Two Northampton celebrate their victory

Liverpool 2-2 Northampton (2-4 pens)

Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza has admitted that the shock Carling Cup win over Liverpool will provide the club with a much-needed cash boost.

The Cobblers beat the Premier League outfit 4-2 on penalties at Anfield on Tuesday night - one of the biggest results in the club's history.

"We were going to need some money just to keep the doors open this season," Cardoza told BBC Radio Northampton.

"But this should solve that now and it's great news," he added.

"We can pay our bills a little bit quicker. We've already brought in a couple of players and we should be looking to bring in one or two more.

Cardoza continued: "If we get a decent draw in the next round we could really kick on.

"But what a night, with 4,500 fans there (at Anfield) - I've never seen anything like it before."
