Defender Andy Holt set for Northampton Town captaincy

Northampton Town defender Andy Holt is set to take over the club captaincy this season.

Holt, 32, skippered the Cobblers in their 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat against Coventry City at Sixfields earlier this week.

Craig Hinton, last season's skipper, has been placed on the transfer list.

"Obviously if the gaffer (manager Ian Sampson) makes me captain I would love to do it," the central defender told BBC Radio Northampton.

"At the moment I'm just trying to get my fitness up.

"And if I'm not captain I'll still try to be as vocal as possible on the pitch and help people through.

"I think I'd do the same with or without the armband - but it would be an honour to have it," he added.

Holt joined Northampton in 2006 after spells with Oldham Athletic, Hull City and Wrexham.
