Northampton boss backs Courtney Herbert to adjust

Herbert has scored twice for the Cobblers this season

Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson says striker Courtney Herbert needs more time to adjust to league football.

The 20-year-old impressed after signing from non-league Long Buckby but suffered a back injury and has only just returned to full fitness.

Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton: "He's come from a lower level and he'll get the time from us to adjust.

"He's only played twice [since his injury]. In time he'll produce performances like earlier this season."

The Cobblers gave 19-year-old striker Joe Benjamin his full debut in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Port Vale, having come through their youth system.

And Sampson was impressed with his performance.

"I'm delighted for Joe, he did really well," he said. "He's benefitted from the time at Eastbourne Borough, come back hungry and he's got the opportunity."
