Northampton defender Chris McCready says his side need to play quicker football to break down defensive teams.
The Cobblers drew 0-0 with struggling Grimsby Town in their last fixture and next face Crewe Alexandra.
McCready told BBC Radio Northampton: "If teams are set up in two banks of four we need to move it quickly and try to switch the play.
"But we don't want to be whacking it up to the front man - we want to play some exciting football."
McCready made over 70 appearances for Crewe over two spells at Gresty Road and is expecting a tough match on Saturday.
"It'll be more like the Crewe of old with Dario Gradi in charge [as caretaker manager]. It's very detailed what he wants from his players, really technical," he added.
The Northampton defender added that competition in the Northampton squad was helping the Cobblers' performances, but that talk of promotion had not been discussed.
"It's obviously good for the team to have as many good players in positions as possible.
"I've been left out a bit lately which is disappointing, but got back in on Saturday and thought I did well so hopefully I'll stay in the team again this Saturday. You're only as good as your last game."
He added: "It's easy to say we want to be in the play-offs, but it's difficult to put that into practice. We haven't been speaking about it, we've just got to win our games."
