Northampton and Grimsby battled to a goalless draw, during which both were reduced to ten men.
Northampton debutant Peter Gilbert was dismissed after 50 minutes for impeding Danny North when he was clear on goal.
The Mariners then had Robert Atkinson sent off 12 minutes from the end of what was a dour game.
Adebayo Akinfenwa had the hosts' best chances in the first half, while Liam Davis came close to winning it for the Cobblers after the break.
Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson tells BBC Radio Northampton:
"It was always going to be a hard fought game, with the swirling wind and rain. They were fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.
"It was all about getting the first goal. It's about results and we've got a point which gets us up the table.
"We're pleased to move up, but it's slow process at the moment. We're trying to build and bring new players in, so I'm not too disappointed."
