Northampton Town have signed centre-half Pat Kanyuka on an initial three-month contract.

The 22-year-old from DR Congo played for the reserves during his trial at the club, and has had spells with at Swindon, QPR and Rangers.

Cobblers manager Ian Sampson told the club's website: "I have been looking to bring in another defender and he is different to what we already have.

"He's settled in well, we've had a good look at him and he has impressed us."

Kanyuka is able to join the club outside the transfer window as he was previously unattached.

Meanwhile, Northampton have extended the loan of Middlesbrough defender John Johnson.

Johnson made six appearances during his first month on loan, scoring once.

The deal was set to expire after the club's trip to Morecambe but has now been extended.

"We are pleased that John will be here for another couple of months," added Sampson.

"He has settled in really well and he is enjoying his football."
