Northampton Town defender Liam Dolman has left Sixfields after failing to earn himself a new contract with the League Two club.
The 21-year-old was invited to report back for pre-season training, but manager Stuart Gray decided to not offer him a new deal.
Gray told BBC Radio Northampton: "I don't think he can work at the level of fitness I want.
"It allows the opportunity for one of the younger lads to come through".
Former Arsenal defender Paul Rodgers is another player trying to earn a contract at Sixfields, having been released by the Gunners.
"Paul's training very well but I need to see him in game situations as well", said Gray.
