Newcastle United utility player Ryan Taylor has been ruled out for up to 12 weeks with ankle ligament damage.

The 26-year-old, who plays at either right-back or right midfield, is thought to have injured himself in a training collision with Sol Campbell.

Newcastle have confirmed that Taylor, who has made four appearances for the Magpies this season, will be absent over the Christmas period.

The former Wigan man underwent an operation in London on Monday.

United manager Chris Hughton told the club website: "It's very disappointing to lose Ryan for this period of time.

"Although he hasn't played as much football as he would have liked, he has been a very important and valuable member of the squad this season."

Taylor has featured in three Carling Cup games this season and made one appearance in the Premier League as a substitute.

He joins Newcastle's long-term injury list that already includes Kazenga LuaLua, Hatem Ben Arfa and Steve Harper.
