Derby win must not cloud Newcastle push - Kevin Nolan

Newcastle United captain Kevin Nolan says the push for Premier League points must not waver despite the euphoria of Sunday's 5-1 win over Sunderland.

The win was the Magpies' biggest in a Tyne-Wear derby since December 1956, but next up is a trip to their Carling Cup conquerors Arsenal on Sunday.

"It's only three points," Nolan told BBC Newcastle. "Now we've got to make sure we get ready for Arsenal.

"We can enjoy the next 24 hours, but from Tuesday - it's Arsenal."

Chris Hughton's side responded to the 3-0 midweek Carling Cup defeat to Arsene Wenger's Arsenal with a stunning derby victory which lifted some of the reported pressure on the Newcastle boss.

Hughton had been the subject of speculation regarding his position at St James' Park, but has now led the Magpies to two wins in two league games.

"You see how much it means for the lads to do it for him, the victory was for him," Nolan added.

"It shut a few stupid people up who were writing stupid stuff about him."

Nolan, who netted a hat-trick in the rout, was appointed as captain by Hughton at the beginning of the season after helping the club to the Championship title last term.

The former Bolton midfielder has taken on the mantle, with seven goals in nine league games so far this season pushing him up among the division's top scorers.

"Hopefully I'm starting to repay him for the faith he showed in me," added Nolan.

"Obviously Chris is a fantastic man, but he gets his point across, and he's a good manager.

"I've worked under some good managers and he is one. I'm delighted to be working with him and delighted he appointed me captain."
