Shola Ameobi desperate for Newcastle United role

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has told Chris Hughton he is determined to force his way into the manager's Premier League plans.

Ameobi marked his first start of the season with a goal in Wednesday's 3-2 Carling Cup victory at League Two Accrington Stanley.

"I've made my views known to the manager, he knows I want to play," Ameobi told BBC Newcastle.

"I just hope I can get my chance and when it comes I can take it."

The Nigeria-born forward scored 11 goals in an injury-affected 2009-10 season at St James' Park, which culminated in promotion back to the top flight as champions.

Ameobi scored eight goals in the club's first eight games of the campaign, including a hat-trick against Reading, before he was struck down by injury.

And the emergence of Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan as a partnership has left him and Denmark forward Peter Lovenkrands watching from the sidelines.

"Last season was a bit disappointing with the injuries I had and this season I was raring to go," said Ameobi.

"Obviously Andy is flying high, and the manager prefers Kevin Nolan up there, which is the manager's decision, but I've made my point to him.

"I feel the need to be playing football, but the lads are doing well and tonight gave me a chance to get 90 minutes."
